Borders Abbeys Way Walks

Mr Murray has indicated that he and some others are keen to do these walks, and so have proposed doing one section on the last Sunday of each month. Use the shoutbox below and the forums to join the discussion about this series of events !  Thanks to Ian for kindly proposing this event, and for taking the lead on organising it !!!!

EICA Aerial Assault - 5th December 09

How do you fancy doing an assault course ... 100 feet in the air ?  For only £9.50 (adults) you can try your hand at this adrenalin filled and trouser filling challenge !  Meeting at 12.00 (approx) at the EICA in Ratho, this will be our last event prior to Christmas !  I thought it might be nice, then, to follow it up with a wee lunch somewere !  Have a look at this video to see what your going to be doing !!!

Usual thing ... if you are up for it ... sign up below !!  This event isn't actually booked yet ... I need to phone them the week prior to arrange it, as you can't book in more than 7 days in advance.

Silversmith Workshop - Sat/Sun - Feb 2010 (TBC)

This is an incredible opportunity !  An introduction to silver smithery (don't even know if that's a real word !) with an expert silversmith here in the Scottish Borders.  Centaur Design, based at Traquair, have very kindly offered us a day's silver working instruction in their workshop.  STRICTLY LIMITED TO 4 PEOPLE, this experience will cost approx £35 for the day, plus whatever the cost of the materials involved in making your product are.  As a very rough ballpark figure, it is suggested that a standard sized silver bangle will cost approx £25, taking the total day to approx £60.  You can choose to create something (anything !) in copper, silver or gold, and it is anticipated that, by the end of the day you will be able to create, from start to finish, your piece of jewellery. You can create a plain piece, or a piece with some intricate design.  If you are interested sign up ASAP ... more details will follow for those who sign up!

Not suitable for wheelchair users, or kids under 10 years of age.

Kayaking at Cauldshiels Loch - 4th April 2010

Time to dust down the old kayaks having been stored over the bitter winter months !  Thought it might be good to meet at cauldshiels for a wee refresher before we go to Whithaugh for the advanced training !!!  Up for a dook in the chilly waters of Cauldshiels ?

Kayaking Training - 10th April 2010 (TBC)

Returning once again to our friends at Whithaugh Park, we have booked a session of more advanced kayaking training.  The cost will be approx £45, but that is for a full day,  being taught river rescue techniques, etc.  Speaking with Sarah Oliver, the trainer, the course is certificated, although quite what the certificate is called, I have no idea !  Anyway ... sure to be a good day, with a maximum number of 8, ending, I would suspect, with a fine meal in the Grapes Hotel in Newcastleton !  Definately worth considering if you are keen to take part in the kayaking expeditions later in the year !

Off-Road Driving - 17th April 2010

How do you fancy between 4 and 5 hours buzzing about the Perthshire countryside in a range of offroad vehicles ?  This event will have you driving landrovers through incredibly challenging terrain, then driving quad bikes, then driving an 8 wheel drive ATV, and then, for a bit of fun, a landrover which has rear wheel steering !!!  In addition, you will then have a chance to drive the offroad karts.  I have been up to this centre, and it really is superb !!!  Visit PERTHSHIRE OFFROAD  for more details.  Cost is £75 per person.  For that reason I have booked this event well into the future.  This event must be paid by end Feb. Usual thing ... use the shout box below to state your interest ...

Anthony Nolan Trust - Zip Slide - 2nd May 2010

Not just any old zip slide, though ... it's a 15 second, 1000 foot adrenalin rush of a zip slide, from the top of the Waterloo Monument on PenielHeugh!!!

Raising much needed funds for our friends at The Anthony Nolan Trust, this will be a cracker!  For more information, and to get the necessary entry and sponsorship forms, please visit the ZIP SLIDE page of the Anthony Nolan Trust website.

While there, why not have a look at what it is they do!  Who knows ... you might even become a donor!!

Border Bogie Challenge - May 2010 (Date TBC)

WANTED !!!  FAT BOAB, WEE ECK AND OOR WULLIE

TO JOIN ME, SOAPY SOUTER, IN THE BORDERS BOGIE CHALLENGE !!!

The Borders Bogie Challenge is an event which took place in May last year.  I think it would be great fun to enter a team for this years event (provided it goes ahead) !!!  We would need to build a bogie and then take part in some timed sprints down a downhill road course from Rubersalw into Denholm village.

We would be looking for a team of no more than 5 or 6 people who are keen to turn their hand to a wee spot of designing, building and driving the worlds FASTEST downhill bogie !!

 Up for it ?

Sea Fishing - June 2010 - Sat/Sun - to be confirmed !

An afternoon out on the ocean, pulling up mackerel and cod a-plenty !  If you fancy it, just sign up in the shout box below !  The cost will be about £180 in total for the afternoon, which works out at approx £22.50 if 8 of us go !   I intend going with Jim Easenwood's boat, Ocean Star (I think), sailing out from Eyemouth.  Deposit of £8 required to book this event, so, if you are keen, please, as well as signing up below,  pay £8 into the Borders Adventurers bank account ASAP.  No experience necessary, and you might even see some porpoises ! We must have 8 signed up for this event to go ahead!

World Flounder Tramping Championship - 7th August

This is a great event !  Every year, on the first Saturday of August, the World Flounder Tramping Championship takes place in Palnackie, Dumfries and Galloway. I don't actually know if it IS happening in 2010, but I suspect it should be !

To find out more about this event, watch this video.  It'll be a great day !!!  Maybe we could make a weekend of it ?  Book some B&B's etc ? Whatever happens, we should certainly make a day of it !!!   BBQ and the likes !!!!

It's an annual fund-raising event for the RNLI ... a worthy cause !!!

Usual thing ... sign up in the shout box if you are up for it !

Whitewater Rafting - DATE CHANGE - Sun 14th Nov 2010

Rafting down the River Orchy ... the most challenging river this particular company offer !  Have a look at www.naelimits.co.uk for more info, but suffice to say they ask that you have some experience of rafting prior to joining them on this particular event.  It may be, then, that we have to do another rafting event earlier in the year ! Cost is £85 (2009's prices) but, if we get 12 people going, we get a 10% discount !  It's a long timeaway, but what the hell !  Up for it ?
